PRISM
It all began with a single beam of light.
Stepping into the raw shell for the first time, we found sunlight flooding through the floor-to-ceiling windows. It cast an unexpected play of light and shadow that mimicked the refraction of a prism. The stillness of these shadows felt almost liquid, evoking the tranquility of standing by a lake and watching sunlight dance on the water. This sense of serenity became our primary cue for the spatial narrative.
We took this physical phenomenon and turned it into the home's core metaphor. The residence acts as a massive prism. However, it does not refract a chaotic spectrum of colors. Instead, it distills the pure essence of living. As light penetrates the interior, the space deconstructs it, diffusing the beams into warm wood tones, soothing atmospheres, and intricate textures.
Isometric View
The essence of a prism lies in filtration and transformation. We applied this logic by using an expansive, desaturated palette as our filter. Starting at the foyer, a light gray wooden volume defines the threshold between the outside world and the interior. Moving inward, what appears to be a continuous monochromatic stream is actually a subtle layering of different materials. Light catches these varying grains and surfaces, breaking down visual uniformity into rich expressions. This tunes the senses to a frequency that is expansive yet incredibly nuanced.
We concealed lighting within the architectural crevices to enhance this effect. Indirect illumination washes the ceiling to accentuate height while linear lights trace structural contours. Base lighting beneath the cabinetry gives the volumes a weightless, floating quality. This interplay of diffused light creates a rhythmic depth that shifts from day to night. It guides the inhabitants from a state of visual engagement to one of psychological grounding.
The elevations intentionally feature ample negative space. We surrendered the walls to art and collections, which allows the owners’ personalities to naturally come into focus. At the transition between the kitchen and the study, glass sliding doors provide a light boundary. They define the zones while allowing sightlines and companionship to extend freely. A dedicated corner of the study awaits a future piano, where melodies will eventually layer the family's memories with a warm, acoustic texture.
Ultimately, the most captivating element refracted by this prism is not light, but time. In this elongated and softened dimension, time seems to dissolve. It allows life to settle gently within a pure and peaceful spectrum.
